The fortune, deferred.
Mozambique holds one of the century's great energy fortunes — Rovuma Basin gas among the world's largest finds — beside a 2,700-kilometre dream coast, the world's most celebrated rewilding story, and southern Africa's gateway ports. And for a decade, every treasure has been deferred: by an insurgency that killed thousands, by the deadliest post-war political unrest after a disputed election, by a $2-billion hidden-debt scandal, by cyclone after cyclone. In January 2026 the deferral began to end — the $20-billion LNG project fully restarted, first gas expected 2029. On overall country-brand strength Mozambique scores 4.4 out of 10: a treasure the world can finally be shown, if the storms keep easing.
01
The diagnosis: a treasure the world keeps being told to wait for.
Few nations hold assets on Mozambique's scale. Offshore, the Rovuma Basin's gas ranks among the largest finds of the century — Eni's Coral Sul floating plant has been exporting since 2022, Coral Norte is approved, and in January 2026 TotalEnergies and the government announced the full restart of the $20-billion Mozambique LNG project, 40% complete, first gas expected in 2029. Onshore: 2,700 kilometres of Indian Ocean coast, the Bazaruto and Quirimbas archipelagos, UNESCO-listed Ilha de Moçambique, Gorongosa's world-famous rewilding, the gateway ports of Maputo, Beira and Nacala, the world's largest graphite mine, and Cahora Bassa's hydropower.
And yet the fortune has been deferred, storm after storm. In the north, an Islamic State-linked insurgency has killed thousands and displaced more than a million people since 2017; the 2021 assault on Palma — in which an estimated 800 people were killed — froze the LNG project for four years, and sporadic attacks persist even as Rwandan forces remain. In the capital, the disputed October 2024 election triggered the deadliest unrest since the civil war — civil-society monitors counted more than 300 people killed — before a dialogue between the president and the opposition leader began easing the confrontation in 2025. Behind both stands the $2-billion hidden-debt scandal that triggered default and a lost decade of trust, now ending in courtrooms. And through it all, cyclones keep landing on a coast where two-thirds of people live in poverty.
The restart changes the question. With workers mobilised — around 80% of them Mozambican — contracts flowing and a 2029 date on the fortune, Mozambique finally has a story of arrival to tell. The brand's task is to earn it: keep the peace winning, land the gas fairly, heal the rupture, bury the hidden-debt era — and show the world the treasure it has never properly seen.
One of the world's great fortunes and Africa's dream coast, deferred for a decade by storms human and natural — now restarting, with everything to prove.
Mozambique's task, in brand terms, is to unlock the deferred fortune — in the right order. So model it.
02
The unlock-the-fortune simulator.
Mozambique's desirability and commercial promise are real; its deficit is trust — the deepest in this atlas's southern region — and a story the world only hears as crisis. The score moves when peace, reconciliation and clean finance rebuild the foundation, and when the coast, Gorongosa and the culture are finally shown. Toggle the plays — or pick a scenario — and watch the country-brand score recompute live.
Each play lifts the dimensions it credibly touches, capped at 10. Pick a scenario or toggle plays individually.

03
The data: world-scale assets against a decade of deferral.
A restarting gas giant, a dream coast and gateway ports on one side; insurgency, a contested election's toll, scandal and cyclones on the other. Figures are drawn from the cited public sources; casualty counts are attributed to monitors and reporting, and may be revised.

04
What the Mozambique brand owns.
Mozambique owns assets of genuinely world scale — an energy fortune now restarting, a coast the Indian Ocean cannot better, the planet's most famous rewilding, and the region's natural gateway.
4.1
A world-scale gas fortune
Rovuma Basin reserves among the century's largest finds — Coral Sul exporting since 2022, the $20bn LNG project restarted, first gas dated 2029.
4.2
The dream coast
2,700 kilometres of Indian Ocean — the Bazaruto and Quirimbas archipelagos, dhow sails and coral flats, and UNESCO-listed Ilha de Moçambique.
4.3
Gorongosa — the rewilding proof
A park brought back from war to global fame: lions, elephants and science returning together — the world's reference case for restoration.
4.4
The region's gateway
Maputo, Beira and Nacala — ports and corridors that serve South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia. The neighbourhood's coast is Mozambican.
4.5
Minerals & megawatts
The world's largest graphite mine at Balama, heavy sands, coal — and Cahora Bassa's hydropower already exporting to the region.
4.6
A Lusophone voice
Mia Couto's literature, marrabenta's music, prawns and peri-peri, and a coastal warmth the region has always known — culture no rival can copy.
05
What holds the brand back.
Mozambique's challenges are the storms themselves — and the trust each one has cost. They are reported here factually, with casualty counts attributed to monitors and reporting.
5.1
The northern insurgency
Thousands killed and over a million displaced since 2017; foreign forces still deployed and sporadic attacks persisting even as the LNG machinery restarts.
5.2
The post-election wound
A disputed 2024 result and the deadliest unrest since the civil war — monitors counted more than 300 killed — with a dialogue only beginning to heal it.
5.3
The hidden-debt shadow
A ~$2bn secret-loan scandal that triggered default and a lost decade of donor and investor trust — closing in courtrooms, not yet in memories.
5.4
Cyclone alley
Idai, Chido and the storms between — a coast in the cyclone belt where disasters keep landing on the poorest communities.
5.5
Deep poverty, thin state
Roughly two-thirds of Mozambicans in poverty, strained services, forex and fuel shortages, and business confidence sliding even as the macro calms.
5.6
A crisis-only narrative
The world hears Palma, protests and cyclones — almost never Bazaruto, Gorongosa or Coral Sul. The treasure has no storyteller.
Mozambique's fortune and Mozambique's storms live in the same province, the same headlines, the same brand. Until the peace is won, the rupture healed and the finances believed, every asset reads as a risk; once they are, the same assets read as the region's greatest upside. The order of operations is the strategy: security and trust first, then the gas, then — at last — the showing of the treasure.
06
The recommended position: the coast of fortunes, unlocking.
Mozambique should not pretend the storms away — the world knows them. The strongest position owns the arc: the nation whose fortune was deferred by everything, now restarting on a dated timeline, with the peace, the dialogue and the courtroom verdicts as proof the foundations are being rebuilt — and the dream coast waiting behind them.

The peace is winning, the dialogue holding, the verdicts in, the machinery restarted with a date on first gas. Hold the foundations, land the benefit, and show the coast at last, and the deferred nation becomes the coast of fortunes — unlocked, and finally seen.
