In a landmark move set to reshape the digital development landscape in Africa, the Italian government will launch the AI Hub for Sustainable Development, a multi-stakeholder initiative aimed at accelerating AI-driven industrial growth across the African continent. The Hub will serve as a centerpiece of the Italy-Africa Mattei Plan and will support Italy’s G7 Presidency objectives in 2024.

🤝 A Vision for Equitable AI Collaboration

Scheduled for official launch on 20 June 2025 in Rome, the AI Hub will represent a bold commitment by Italy to promote inclusive, ethical, and scalable AI ecosystems in Africa. With an annual budget of €5 million, the initiative will be co-led by Italy’s Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It will also align with global frameworks, including the EU Global Gateway and the African Union’s AI Strategy.

“This is not just about technology—it’s about partnerships designed by and with Africa’s innovators to unlock the full potential of AI for sustainable development,” Minister Adolfo Urso is expected to say during the opening ceremony.

🧱 Building the Foundations of Africa’s AI Future

At its core, the AI Hub will be built on four foundational pillars:

  1. Inclusive Datasets: Promoting context-relevant and representative data from African communities.
  2. Local AI Talent Development: Empowering a new generation of African data scientists, developers, and entrepreneurs.
  3. Green Compute Infrastructure: Ensuring access to affordable and energy-efficient computational resources.
  4. Responsible AI Environments: Creating regulatory and ethical frameworks tailored to African contexts.

These pillars will translate into actionable programmes designed to support entrepreneurs, boost public-private partnerships, and align AI innovation with Africa’s development priorities.

🌍 Strategic Sectors & Impact Focus

The Hub will focus on six strategic sectors critical to Africa’s economic resilience and social transformation:

  1. Agriculture
  2. Healthcare
  3. Infrastructure
  4. Education & Skills Training
  5. Water Access
  6. Energy Systems

With a projected network of over 100 partners, including African governments, EU institutions, global tech firms, and development finance actors, the AI Hub is expected to emerge as a transformative force for digital and industrial development in Africa.

🌐 Flagship Programmes to Be Unveiled

During the official launch, the following key programmes will be introduced:

  1. AI Hub Platform: A digital gateway with an AI Coach chatbot, matchmaking tools, and curated onboarding for stakeholders.
  2. Africa Green Compute Coalition (AGCC): A multi-stakeholder network to increase access to sustainable, energy-efficient computing infrastructure.
  3. Compute Accelerator: Providing African ventures with access to compute credits, technical support, and global mentorship.
  4. AI Infrastructure Builder Programme: Connecting African AI ecosystem builders with governments, investors, and global tech partners.

🗣 Global Voices and High-Level Endorsements

The launch will feature keynote addresses from influential leaders, including Microsoft President Brad Smith, senior officials from the African Union, the European Commission, the African Development Bank, and ministers from Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Algeria, and the Republic of the Congo.

In a joint statement, Vincenzo Del Monaco (Italy’s diplomatic advisor), Keyzom Ngodup Massally (UNDP), and Eva Spina (Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy) are expected to affirm:

“It is imperative to create space for developing countries not merely to use AI, but to become equal partners in its development, governance, and deployment. This ensures its benefits are harnessed responsibly and sustainably for long-term impact.”

🧭 A Call to Action

The launch of the AI Hub will mark not an endpoint, but a call to action. Governments, businesses, civil society, and innovators across the continent will be invited to co-create Africa’s AI future. The emphasis will be on local ownership, regional cooperation, and global solidarity.

As the world continues to embrace the transformative power of AI, Italy’s AI Hub for Sustainable Development is poised to offer a new blueprint for mutual innovation and shared purpose—one where the Global South co-authors the digital future, not just consumes it.
