Edzai Conilias Zvobwo, mathematician, data scientist, and founder of Acalytica, will deliver a keynote presentation at the Applied Machine Learning Days (AMLD) Africa 2026 conference on January 28, 2026, at 09:30 AM. The talk, part of the AI for Economic Empowerment track's AI for Entrepreneurship subtrack, will draw from his recently published book, Mathematics of Disruption: A South African Story About AI, Fragility, and the Power of Math.
The presentation will take place at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, during the fourth edition of AMLD Africa, a premier gathering of AI researchers, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and practitioners from across the continent.
About the Presentation
Zvobwo's 20-minute talk challenges the conventional narrative that Africa must "catch up" to Silicon Valley through infrastructure investment. Instead, he argues that mathematical sovereignty is technological sovereignty, and that South Africa's unique constraints can become competitive advantages.
"Disruption in AI will not come only from faster chips or larger datasets, but from mathematics itself," Zvobwo writes in the book's preface. "Silicon Valley builds AI for stable grids and reliable infrastructure. We build AI that works when the power goes out. That's the AI the world needs."
The presentation will guide audiences through the book's eight mathematical landscapes, from floating-point fragility to quantum computing, using South African metaphors and contexts. Attendees will meet the book's characters: Thandi, a curious Wits graduate student; Sipho, a pragmatic Cape Town engineer; Professor Khumalo, a UCT mathematician; and The Machine itself, an AI voice that speaks in probabilities and reminds us of its limits.
Key Themes
The talk will cover:
- The Original Sin of Computer Arithmetic: Why even "deterministic" AI produces different answers, explained through minibus taxi routes and shisa nyama batching
- The Eight Pillars for South African AI: A roadmap including robust computation, causal AI for policy, compressed accessible AI, and quantum readiness
- Ubuntu AI: The philosophical foundation for building technology that prioritises collective benefit, transparency, inclusivity, and dignity
- Mathematical Sovereignty: Why countries that understand AI's mathematical foundations can shape its future, while those that only consume will remain dependent
About the Book
Mathematics of Disruption (ISBN: 978-1-326-08561-2) was published by Acalytica in October 2025. The 55-page book blends technical rigour with storytelling, making complex concepts accessible through South African examples, from vetkoek batching to the Drakensberg mountains, from the JSE trading floor to the SKA telescope in the Karoo.
The book is available in eBook and print formats at acalytica.com/mathematics-of-disruption for R150 ZAR.

"Somewhere in Soweto, a child is learning algebra. In Khayelitsha, a student writes her first Python script. In the Karoo, SKA telescopes gather data for quantum computing. The seeds are planted. Now we must tend the garden." — Mathematics of Disruption, Chapter 9
