Nairobi, Kenya | 16-18 December 2025
The African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD), through the African Union High-Level Panel on Emerging Technologies (APET), is convening leading continental experts in Nairobi, Kenya from 16-18 December 2025 for a pivotal workshop on 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. Among the distinguished panel of experts is Edzai Zvobwo, Founder and CEO of Acalytica, a proudly African digital growth platform that has been empowering creators, entrepreneurs, and SMEs across the continent.
A Voice for African Digital Transformation
Edzai Zvobwo brings a unique combination of mathematical rigour, technological expertise, and entrepreneurial insight to the APET panel. As a mathematician, data scientist, AI strategist, and entrepreneur, his work sits at the intersection of numbers, narratives, and new economies. His platform, Acalytica, has become a critical piece of infrastructure for inclusive digital development, actively used across South African townships, Zimbabwean creative circles, and various sectors from green energy to public health.
Zvobwo's credentials include recognition as one of Africa's Top 40 Education Innovators (2019), selection as a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Goalkeeper, and being a YALI TechCamp alumnus. He has served as SABC's STEM Education Ambassador and authored multiple books on technology and education, including the recent "Mathematics of Disruption: A South African Story About AI". His voice on AI's potential for African advancement has been featured at major continental forums including LEADEREX 2025 and the African Startup Conference.
Why This Workshop Matters for Africa
The Nairobi workshop represents a critical juncture in Africa's technological trajectory. According to the APET report on 5G and IoT currently being developed, the combined global 5G-IoT market is valued at US$3.6 billion in 2023 and projected to reach US$55.1 billion by 2033. Yet Africa risks being left behind: while 80% of European phone users are expected to have 5G service by 2027, only 10% of African users will have access.
Currently, only about 11 African countries—including Botswana, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria, South Africa, and Tanzania—have some 5G infrastructure, leaving 43 countries without any deployment. The African IoT market, while growing, is projected to reach only US$16 billion by 2028—a mere 3% of the global volume.
The disparity is stark when considering Africa's development needs. The continent that accounts for 17% of the global population faces extreme poverty levels, with countries like Nigeria representing 11.9% of the global population living below the extreme poverty line. 5G and IoT technologies offer transformative potential across every sector—from precision agriculture and smart healthcare to manufacturing automation and smart cities—that could accelerate Africa's progress toward Agenda 2063 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Strategic Pillars Under Discussion
The APET expert workshop will address five critical pillars essential for Africa's 5G and IoT advancement:
The 5G & IoT Economy: Examining how these technologies can drive wealth creation across sectors including manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, finance, transport, energy, and smart cities. Evidence from global markets shows that 5G deployment in the US retail sector alone could drive US$269.5 billion in additional industry revenues over five years.
Governance and Regulatory Frameworks: Developing the policy infrastructure necessary for spectrum licensing, data protection, and cross-border harmonisation that will enable seamless technology deployment across the continent.
Infrastructure and Data Foundations: Addressing the backbone infrastructure requirements for uniform 5G rollout and IoT implementation, recognising that many African nations still lack basic telecommunications networks in urban centres.
Human Capital Development: Building the skilled workforce necessary to deploy, manage, and harvest the benefits of 5G and IoT infrastructure—a critical gap given Africa's current technical capacity constraints.
Sustainable Partnerships: Mobilising public-private partnerships and international collaboration to fund and exploit the 5G/IoT infrastructure, following successful models from developed markets.
Expert Perspective
"Africa's digital transformation cannot wait. While developed nations race ahead with 5G deployment and IoT integration, we must ensure that African solutions are developed by Africans, for Africans. This workshop represents a crucial opportunity to shape policy recommendations that will determine whether the continent captures the benefits of these emerging technologies or is left as a mere consumer of foreign innovations. The potential for 5G and IoT to address Africa's most pressing challenges—from healthcare access to agricultural productivity—is immense, but only if we act decisively and collaboratively."

About APET
The African Union High-Level Panel on Emerging Technologies (APET) serves as a pathfinder Think Tank and Strategic Initiative of AUDA-NEPAD. Established in 2016 by directive of African Heads of State and Government, APET advises the African Union, its Member States, and various organs on harnessing innovation and emerging technologies for socio-economic development. The Panel has prioritised ten emerging technologies for Africa, including artificial intelligence, gene drives for malaria control, drones for precision agriculture, and 5G/IoT technologies. APET's recommendations have been endorsed at AU Summits and are shaping continental policy across multiple technology domains.
About Acalytica
Acalytica is Africa's digital growth platform for creators, SMEs, and events. Born from the gap between entrepreneurship training and real-world implementation, the no-code platform enables users to launch digital storefronts, process payments, track analytics, and grow their brands—all from their phones. Actively used across Southern Africa and beyond, Acalytica represents the kind of homegrown innovation that demonstrates Africa's capacity to develop solutions tailored to continental realities.
